GATE 2026 Cutoff Analysis
The GATE 2026 qualifying cutoff varied considerably across papers. Among popular engineering papers, the General cutoff was 30.0 for CS, 28.7 for CE, 27.7 for EE, 26.4 for EC, 26.4 for DA and 25.2 for ME.
The highest General cutoffs of 40 marks were recorded in papers including AR, EY, MT, PE, XH-C2 and XH-C6. The cutoff for Physics was 25.5 marks.
These are qualifying marks only. Candidates usually need a much higher score for admission to top institutes or PSU recruitment.
GATE Category-wise Cutoff
GATE qualifying marks are announced separately for General, OBC-NCL/EWS and SC/ST/PwD categories.
| Category | Cutoff |
| General | Highest qualifying cutoff |
| OBC-NCL/EWS | 90% of General cutoff |
| SC/ST/PwD | Two-thirds of General cutoff |
The exact qualifying marks are calculated according to the GATE cutoff procedure and may vary by paper. For GATE 2026, the official table confirms the category-wise values for every paper.
What are GATE Qualifying Marks?
GATE qualifying marks are the minimum marks required to qualify in a particular paper and category. There is no single qualifying mark for all GATE papers.
For example, the GATE 2026 General cutoff was 30.0 for CS, 28.7 for CE, 27.7 for EE and 25.2 for ME.
GATE Qualifying Cutoff vs Admission Cutoff
The GATE qualifying cutoff and admission cutoff are different.
| Qualifying Cutoff | Admission Cutoff |
| Released with the GATE result | Released by individual institutes |
| Determines whether a candidate qualifies GATE | Used for admission or shortlisting |
| Paper and category-wise | Institute, course and category-wise |
| Lower than most competitive admission cutoffs | Usually higher |
Qualifying GATE does not guarantee admission, scholarship or PSU recruitment. The GATE 2027 official website also states that admission and recruitment depend on the respective institute or organisation.
Factors Affecting GATE Cutoff
The GATE qualifying cutoff can change every year based on:
- Difficulty level of the paper.
- Overall candidate performance.
- Number of candidates appearing.
- Paper-specific competition.
- GATE cutoff calculation rules.
- Previous cutoff trends.
Previous Year GATE Cutoff
Previous year cutoffs help candidates understand the qualifying range and set realistic preparation targets.
| Year | Official Cutoff |
| GATE 2026 | [Official Cutoff] |
| GATE 2025 | [Official Cutoff] |
| GATE 2024 | [Official Cutoff] |
Candidates should use official qualifying marks rather than unofficial expected cutoff predictions wherever possible.

Expected GATE Cutoff 2027
The GATE 2027 cutoff has not been released yet. Since the examination is scheduled for February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21, 2027, the official qualifying marks will be available only after the result is announced on March 19, 2027.
For now, candidates can use the GATE 2026 cutoff as the latest benchmark. The actual GATE 2027 cutoff will depend on paper difficulty and candidate performance.
How to Check GATE Cutoff 2027?
Candidates can check the official cutoff after the result by following these steps:
- Visit the official GATE 2027 website.
- Open the result or cutoff section.
- Check the paper-wise qualifying marks.
- Select the applicable category.
- Download the cutoff details for future reference.
GATE Cutoff for IIT Admissions
The GATE qualifying cutoff is not the IIT admission cutoff. IITs release their own admission requirements based on the programme, category, seats, applicants and GATE scores.
Candidates targeting IIT admissions should therefore check the specific IIT-wise and programme-wise GATE cutoff.
GATE Cutoff for NIT Admissions
M.Tech admissions to participating NITs, IIEST, selected IIITs and GFTIs are conducted through CCMT. Admission cutoffs vary by institute, programme, category and counselling round.
Candidates should check the latest CCMT opening and closing scores for their preferred programme.
GATE Cutoff for PSU Recruitment
PSUs that use GATE scores generally have their own recruitment cutoffs and shortlisting criteria. These are different from the GATE qualifying cutoff.
The PSU cutoff can depend on:
- Number of vacancies.
- GATE paper.
- Candidate category.
- GATE score.
- Recruitment criteria.
Qualifying GATE alone does not guarantee PSU recruitment.
GATE Preparation Strategy
Candidates should not prepare only to clear the qualifying cutoff. A higher GATE score improves opportunities for competitive admissions and recruitment.
Focus on:
- Completing the latest GATE syllabus.
- Solving previous year question papers.
- Attempting regular mock tests.
- Revising important concepts and formulas.
- Solving GATE Previous Year Question Papers
- Analysing mistakes.
- Tracking previous year cutoff trends.
